Journaling helps us connect to our inner wisdom, and doing so allows us to bring healing and awareness to our emotional selves and to move towards personal peace and self-compassion.
Carolyn Herman is a US trained therapist who lives in Costa Rica. For the last 20+ years, she has worked as a therapist, therapeutic educator, emotions coach and an expressive writing instructor.
Carolyn’s work is underpinned by the knowledge that a loving understanding of who we are now helps us move towards who we want to be. From this posture she nudges her clients and writers to a place of emotional self-awareness and self compassion. She believes that awareness is the first step towards healing. When we can understand ourselves, our patterns and our motivations, we can also understand how to shift them.
Carolyn has written a book called “Emotional Evolution” – which offers journaling techniques and prompts to guide readers to discover who they are emotionally, and help them see where they are stuck and how to shift when needed.
At BFJ ‘26 Carolyn will teach techniques from her book, offering new ways to explore and understand your emotional self.

Emotions can be uncomfortable. Some more than others. Each of us has an emotional comfort zone – emotions that we are comfortable feeling and others that we avoid like the plague. Family, culture, and life experiences all create emotional patterns, and sometimes those patterns make us feel stuck.
In Carolyn’s workshop, we will journal our way to a better understanding of our emotional selves by digging into the concept of comfortable and uncomfortable emotions. What is your “go to” or “default” emotion? Is it keeping you from feeling or expressing other emotions that perhaps you’ve learned to push aside? When we understand this part of our emotional selves, we can pay better attention to the feelings we are avoiding, the patterns we are creating and expand our emotional comfort zone.
